CrossFit Journal: How Fit Are You?
Test 4: Deadlift 1RM × Max Handstand Push-ups
Deadlift: ramp up to a one-rep max.
Handstand push-ups: within 30 seconds of completing the deadlift, perform a max set of handstand push-ups. The ears must go below the hands, so use parallel bars, parallettes, or another raised platform. Using the wall for balance is OK.
Scoring: Enter the deadlift load in pounds as round 1 and handstand push-ups completed as round 2. Your score is load × handstand push-ups (for example, 350 × 10 = 3,500).
Modifications: Provide manual assistance (usually by lifting the athlete by the calves or ankles). If even the handstand is a challenge, substitute the shoulder press.
Character: A reasonable estimate of total strength: relative and absolute, upper and lower body.
Practice workout: 3–5 repetitions of the test, resting between efforts as needed.
Points: 3,500 / 4,800 / 6,750 / 10,000 / 15,000+ earn 4 / 8 / 12 / 16 / 20 points.
